Exercise and fitness are a part of that lifestyle, and people here take pride in their healthy, youthful appearance. However, for about half of the women and many of the men in Orange County, spider veins can cause embarrassment and discomfort, limiting their enjoyment of an active lifestyle.

Dr. Richard J. Fischel is a Southern California native and highly trained cardiovascular surgeon. He and his partner, Dr. John P. Maurice, are vein specialists with offices in Newport Beach. Spider veins are among the many vein disorders for which they offer advanced treatment options.

Description, Causes, and Symptoms of Spider Veins

What are Spider Veins?

Also called telangiectasias or sunburst varicosities, spider veins are tiny, superficial veins which congregate in red, purple, and blue clusters that are easily visible through the surface of the skin. They occur most commonly on the thighs, ankles, and calves, and are not essential to the larger venous system. Click here to see photos of spider veins, before and after treatment.

Causes of Spider Veins

Although the causes of spider veins aren't completely understood, there are a variety of factors which contribute to the development of this condition. These include heredity, occupations which require prolonged standing, pregnancy and other incidences of hormonal shifts, obesity, and the use of certain medications. Women develop spider veins more often than men, and they increase in frequency with age.

Symptoms of Spider Veins

Symptoms of spider veins are mainly cosmetic, with clusters of red or bluish-purple veins forming mainly on the legs, but occasionally on the face or arms. Some incidences may be quite small and almost unnoticeable, while others may be larger and more prominent. Some patients complain of aching, burning, or swelling associated with spider veins.
